My First Balun…Fail!

So I build up and wire the balun as a 1:1 current balun. Place a 50 Ohm load simulating the antenna and hook it up to the antenna analyzer. The results did not look right at all as the SWR climbed rapidly from zero to almost full scale.

I puzzled over this a bit and then tried to measure an “ugly balun” that I had made for the 2m Moxon. I hooked up the dummy load with alligator clip jumpers and low and behold the same response. Removed the jumpers and went through proper connectors and viola! Flat SWR across the bands.

Not sure yet what the cause is but suspect poor resistance contact or added capacitance from the leads. I have been able to improve the response of the balun but somethis still not right.
